The King's knife is back! Helle Dyre Vaa was first launched in 1978 and quickly became an 80s classic. Its fame grew after the knife was used by then Norwegian king Olav to cut the ribbon on the first winter road across Strynefjellet, which led to it becoming known as "The King's knife".
To honor the fact that current Norwegian King Harald V finally visited Askvoll municipality (where Holmedal is located) on the 28th of May 2026, we have made 500 new Dyre Vaa knives in various iterations. The king got one of those knives - the rest is available for sale.
About Dyre Vaa
Dyre Vaa is a beautiful knife with a particular shape. The blade, made from polished H3LS steel with a Scandi Grind, has a long, trailing point shape that gives it a striking look and made it a favorite among hunters in the 80s.
The handle is often referred to as "military grade", in that it has powerful front and end pieces made out of brass. Between the brass pieces of leather protect a handle made out of oiled Curly Birch.
The knife comes with a classic sheath from Ox leather that follows the curved shape of the blade. It is not sown, but rather thread with a strong leather cord.
