This year, the Harding turns 40 and celebrates its Ruby anniversary. To mark the occasion and to honor the success and legacy of the Harding, we have dedicated our 2026 limited edition knife to the model originally created by Helle worker Erling Opstad.
The Harding is a modern Helle classic. The beautiful handle that combines light and dark materials and the highly polished, drop-point blade have contributed to it being one of our most popular models throughout our 94-year history.
The Harding Rubin (rubin being the Norwegian word for Ruby) plays on the history of the Harding, but changes the visual aspects of the knife in ways that are quite striking. First, we have incorporated the ruby-color in both the handle and the sheath, adding red leather to the handle and to the stitching on the sheath. This plays to this being the 40 year anniversary edition – and adds new flair and visibility to the design as well.

Second, the handle pattern from the traditional Harding has been changed to incorporate more layers, adding complexity and changing the visual profile of the knife.
Third, we dived into our wood-storage and found spalted beech from 1986 – the year that the first Harding was made. Spalted wood is wood infested with fungus. This fungus in turn changes the structure of wood, altering the color and complexion in the process. This creates beautiful, patterned, multifaceted wood. We then stabilized it and cut it into two cross-sections (x-cut) that fit perfectly between pieces of newer, stabilized beech (Kebony).
The result is a handle on the Harding Rubin that still plays with the dark and light tones of the original Harding, but in a distinctly different way than the original. The complexion of the Harding Rubin therefore carefully mirrors the original, highly-polished, H3LS blade.

The knife is very comfortable in my hand and the blade does a very good job at everything I need. It is razor sharp and the size is perfect for most of my use (works better in most cases than my Nordlys, which blade is much wide and is a bit bulky for some jobs). And it's easy to keep it sharp as well.
The disappointment first came with the sheath that wasn't looking good out of the box, the leather was not processed properly and dried inconsistently, and even cracked in some places. Even though it was out of the box, I decided not to bother since functionally it's still fine.
Later, just few weeks after, I noticed that the lather in the handle started also changing it's size, shrunk and left some parts of handle uneven, and even tiny holes can be seen between the stacks when not used for a couple of days.
I love how Helle knives looks and work, and will likely still buy more, but will definitely avoid knives with the stacked handles, although those are the most beautiful.
This is a stunning addition to my Helle collection, exceptionally beautifully finished. Thank you for this beautiful Harding Rubin!
A wonderful knife where history blends with the ancient art of Nordic knifemaking. I'm not familiar with Helle's rolled stainless steel, but I'm confident in the quality of the factory's products. The limited edition adds value to this beautiful piece
