The Helle Nying is maybe our most classic Helle knife. Short and stubby, and with a distinct design like no other. Some consider it to be ugly, but for the many who use it is a loved tool for long carving sessions by the campfire.
The Helle Nying has received awards for its unique and classic design, just as much as it has been rejected by many. Still it is one of our true, long term friends to bring on the belt. Proudly in production at Helle since 1977 and made in more than 1 million copies, which is a lot for a small factory like Helle.
The handle is generously proportioned to give a good grip and control over the blade. A slight fingerguard to guide your hand to a safe handle position, even if held close to the blade. This is a knife used for quality time and carving.
Nying comes in an attractive leather sheath that has a design cutout with the resemblance of fire flames. Fitted with a keeper strap that engages on the stud on the knife pommel. A suspension strap of leather keeps it dangling on your belt Norwegian style.

Remember my boyhood days in the 1970s when the Helle Fording knife was pictured in the hunting catalog of my dad’s preferred outdoor store. Some years later it was succeeded by the Helle Nying. During the very early days they called it Super-Fjording. I remember dad and me glancing at the beautiful birch handles and the iconic sheath design!
However it took until my 1st visit to Norway in the early 1990s to put my hands on one. My wife rose an eyebrow on “another knife” but when she saw it first time, she wanted one, too. So I left the store in Bergen with three Helle Nyings: for dad, my wife and myself.
Meanwhile I own three of them - and two early vintage Helle Fjording knives, too.
I love these compact and lightweight knives for their design and controllability. They are so typical Norwegian with the curly birch handles and their fine, triple laminated edges, not to forget the eye-catching sheath showing the famous Norwegian Selbu-rose pattern.
They accompanied me traveling, hunting, fishing, mountain-hiking, skiing and one rides permanently in my car.
A very strong recommendation!!!
Bought this and the Fjellkniven 1985 in an outdoor store in Frankfurt, Germany and they have been with me on many adventures. Both never failed me.
Awesome small knife
It's reminding me of that cold winters meny years ago, with granddad next to fire place eating an apple from trusted granddad poket knife blade.
I like it in all ways.
Great product with great quality, It feels nice to hold.
